Lessons

Wellington Riding is a British Horse Society Approved School with BHS trained and qualified staff. We have the horses, ponies, instructors and facilities to suit the needs of every rider – from absolute beginners to aspiring competition riders with their own horse.

We teach children from the age of 5. There is no upper age limit, but please note our upper weight limit is 14st.

Beginner riders (both adults and children) start off with half-hour private lessons while they get to grips with the basics and build their riding confidence.

Once riding independently off the lead rein (usually after 4-6 half-hour lessons) your instructor will recommend a suitable group.

We offer tuition every day except Sundays & Mondays.

Bookings may be made in person, via email or by telephone every day. We will take your height, weight, experience and contact details and require payment at the time of booking.

Childrens Lessons

Child Beginners

Children can start riding at Wellington Riding from 5 years old. They start with half hour one-to-one sessions to help build their confidence and learn the basics. Once they are fairly confident on their ponies they are ready to join a one hour group lesson. This is normally after 4-6 half hour sessions. The first group is Falabella, this is an hours group and the children may be led. Once into a group lesson they will progress up the levels of groups as they improve. The group lessons are regularly assessed to ensure that the children are in the correct group for their standard of riding.

Child Riders

Children who can already ride can start at Wellington Riding with a half hour one-to-one assessment lesson. From the lesson your instructor will recommend what level of group lesson will be most suitable for you or if you need a few more one-to-ones before joining a group.

Our group lessons are after school during the week and on Saturdays. An assessment lesson can be booked at most times through the week and Saturdays depending on availability. Once you have joined a group lesson you will be regularly assessed to see if you are ready to move up a level.

The group lessons progress as follows:

  1. Falabella
  2. Shetland
  3. Exmoor
  4. New Forest
  5. Welsh
  6. Connemara
  7. Fell
  8. Highland

Adult Lessons

Adult Beginners

For adults who wish to get into the saddle for the first time there is no age limit!

We start you off with half hour one-to-one sessions to gain confidence and learn the basics. Once you are cantering on your own you can join a beginner group lesson. Once you are in a group lesson you will be continually assessed by your Instructor who will let you know when you are ready to move up. Half hour one-to-one sessions can be booked at any time through the week and at weekends depending on availability. Group lessons are on Saturdays and weekday evenings (see timetable).

Adult Riders

We have a wide range of horses and instructors to suit adult riders at all levels. Whether you are looking to join a regular group or enjoy some more intensive private instruction we would be delighted to arrange something for you. On your first visit to us we like to assess you in a half-hour one-to-one session and discuss with you what type of lessons you are looking for. We can then recommend a suitable group lesson for you or arrange more private sessions.

Adult group lessons are graded as Beginner, Novice, Intermediate and Advanced. These lessons take place on Saturdays and during the week in the evenings. Please see our timetable for more details.

Important Hat Updates For 2016

Due to a change by the European Commission regarding EN1384 and BSEN1384 no longer being an accepted standard, all hats which ONLY meet the standard EN1384 or BSEN1384, with or without a kitemark, and do not comply with another standard from the below list, WILL NOT be permitted for use at any BHS Approved Centre.

Hats which bear EN1384 or BSEN1384 ALONG WITH another standard from the below list, will be permitted. For example, BSEN1384 & PAS015 (1998 or 2011) along with the Kitemark would be acceptable, but not BSEN1384 on its own.

The current BHS-recognised standards are:

  • PAS015:( 1998 or 2011) with BSI kitemark
  • VG1 01.0404: (2014 -12) with BSI kitemark
  • ASTM F1163:(2004a or 04a onwards) with SEI mark,
  • SNELL E2001: with Official SNELL label and number
  • AS/NZS 3838 (2006 onwards) with SAI Global Mark

Hats should also ideally be Kitemarked. The Kitemark is a quality assurance mark and is the registered trademark of the British Standards Institute (BSI). It can only be affixed to products certified by them.
